Finding Joy in the Face of Doubt so you Thrive

Sharron Keogh   May 14, 2023   min read

Do you often find yourself second-guessing your decisions or feeling unsure about your abilities?  Do you feel like you're not good enough or that you'll never measure up to others?  These feelings of doubt can be incredibly debilitating, and if left unchecked, they can prevent you from living a full and joyful life.

As a coach, I have seen firsthand how doubt can hold women back from achieving their goals and living their best lives.  In this article, we'll explore why doubt arises, the impact it can have on your mental health, and most importantly, how to overcome it and reclaim your joy.

What is doubt?

Doubt is a feeling of uncertainty or lack of confidence in oneself or one's abilities.  It can arise in any area of your life, from your career to your relationships to your personal goals.  Doubt can manifest in different ways, such as questioning whether you're good enough, comparing yourself to others, or feeling like you'll never succeed.

Why does doubt arise?

Doubt often arises from past experiences or limiting beliefs that we hold about ourselves.  For example, if you were told as a child that you were not smart enough or not talented enough, those messages can stick with you and create feelings of self-doubt later in life.

Additionally, societal expectations and pressure to perform can also contribute to feelings of doubt.  Women, in particular, may face unique challenges in the workplace and in their personal lives that can lead to self-doubt.  For example, women are often expected to be perfect in all areas of their lives, from their appearance to their performance at work, which can create unrealistic expectations and a fear of failure.

The impact of doubt on your mental health

Doubt can have a significant impact on your mental health, leading to feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression.  When you doubt yourself, you may feel like you're not good enough or that you'll never measure up, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness and despair.

Moreover, doubt can prevent you from taking action towards your goals and dreams, leaving you feeling stuck and unfulfilled.  This can create a vicious cycle of self-doubt and inaction, which can have a long-term impact on your mental health and wellbeing.

How to overcome doubt

Overcoming doubt is a process that takes time and effort, but it is possible with the right tools and strategies.  Here are some tips to help you overcome doubt and reclaim your joy:

  1. Challenge your limiting beliefs

One of the most powerful ways to overcome doubt is to challenge your limiting beliefs. Identify the negative messages that you've internalised about yourself, and ask yourself whether they're really true.  For example, if you're telling yourself that you're not smart enough to pursue a particular career, ask yourself whether that's really true or whether it's just a limiting belief.

  1. Practice self-compassion

Self-compassion is the practice of treating yourself with kindness and understanding, especially in moments of difficulty or failure.   When you're feeling doubt, try to approach yourself with self-compassion rather than self-criticism.  Recognise that everyone makes mistakes and that failure is a natural part of the learning process.

  1. Focus on your strengths

When you're feeling doubt, it's easy to focus on your weaknesses and shortcomings.  However, this can create a negative feedback loop that reinforces your self doubt.  Instead, try to focus on your strengths and accomplishments.  Make a list of your achievements and things you're proud of, and refer to it when you're feeling doubt creeping in.

  2. Surround yourself with positivity

The people you surround yourself with can have a significant impact on your mindset and self-esteem.  Surround yourself with positive and supportive people who encourage and uplift you.  Seek out communities and groups that align with your values and goals, and connect with like-minded individuals who can offer support and guidance.

  1. Take action

One of the most effective ways to overcome doubt is to take action towards your goals and dreams.  When you take action, you're proving to yourself that you're capable and competent, which can help to build your confidence and reduce feelings of doubt.  Start with small steps, and gradually work your way towards your larger goals.

Closing

Doubt is a joy killer that can prevent you from living your best life.  However, by challenging your limiting beliefs, practicing self-compassion, focusing on your strengths, surrounding yourself with positivity, and taking action towards your goals, you can overcome doubt and reclaim your joy.  Remember, overcoming doubt is a process that takes time and effort, but it's worth it in the end.

As a coach, I have seen countless women overcome doubt and achieve their goals.  If you're struggling with doubt, know that you're not alone, and that there is hope.  With the right tools and strategies, you can overcome doubt and live a fulfilling and joyful life.
